Three decisions, not one
Parents come to me asking “which is the best college for 11th and 12th?” as though it were a single question. It is actually three, and they must be answered in this order.
- Which board — Telangana State Board (Intermediate, via TSBIE) or CBSE (Classes 11 and 12)?
- Which stream — MPC for engineering, or BiPC for medicine?
- Which college — and specifically, is entrance-exam preparation integrated into the timetable or bought separately?
Most families get the order wrong. They pick a college first because of a hoarding or a neighbour’s recommendation, then discover in Class 12 that the board choice has quietly closed a door. Get the sequence right and the college shortlist narrows itself.
Decision 1: State Board Intermediate or CBSE?

There is no universally superior board here. If your child is likely to sit TG EAMCET and wants a state engineering seat as a realistic second path, state board Intermediate is usually the more efficient choice. Decision 2: MPC or BiPC
MPC — Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry — leads to JEE Main, JEE Advanced, TG EAMCET and BITSAT, and to engineering. BiPC — Biology, Physics, Chemistry — leads to NEET and to medicine. This choice is made at the start of Class 11 and is very difficult to reverse after the first few months, because the two syllabi diverge immediately.
My one piece of advice here, after 14 years of watching it go wrong: choose on the child’s demonstrated aptitude and interest, not on the parent’s preference or the cousin’s career. Decision 3: the college — and the five checks that matter
1. Is entrance-exam preparation inside the timetable?
At an integrated junior college, the board syllabus and JEE or NEET preparation are one course taught by one faculty team. At a non-integrated college, your child attends college in the morning and a separate coaching institute in the evening — two commutes, two faculty teams, two test calendars and a 14-hour day. Ask which arrangement you are being offered.
2. What is the batch cap, in writing?
Nine Education caps every batch at 40 students as a written admissions policy across all 15 campuses. Ask any college for its number and ask to see the register for the specific batch your child would join.
3. Who is teaching, and what did they qualify?
Every faculty member at Nine Education is an IIT or NIT alumnus, and our IIT Kharagpur co-founders still teach. Ask any college to name the specific faculty member for your child’s section and what they cleared themselves.
4. Are board marks protected?
A student who does well in JEE but poorly in the board exam loses EAMCET options and, in some cases, IIT eligibility. Ask how the college protects board performance during the entrance-exam crunch — a real answer involves a specific revision calendar, not reassurance.
5. How long is the commute?
Ninety minutes each way costs roughly 1,500 study hours over two years. Two-year Intermediate programmes in Hyderabad range from approximately ₹80,000 to ₹3,00,000 depending on institution, batch tier and whether the programme is residential. Answer board, then stream, then college — in that order.
